Old Mellifont AbbeyMellifont Abbey is an impressive site which marked an important landmark in Irish religious history. The abbey was founded in 1142 by St Malachy the archbishop of Armagh and was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. It was based on the model of these monasteries in Europe and led to the expansion of the Cistercian community throughout Ireland. Today the outline of the monastery complex is still visible and some parts are still recognisable. There is a visitor centre on the site and guided tours are available from May to October. |
