Monasterboice Tower and High Cross, Monasterboice, Co. Louth.Monasterboice is famous for its three striking Celtic Crosses and round tower. The crosses date from the 10 th century and depict incidents from the Bible. The largest cross known as Muiredach's Cross stands over 5 metres high and is regarded as one of the finest examples of religious art surviving in Ireland today. The tower dates from the 5 th century when the monks used it as a refuge from rampaging Vikings. This site is open all year round but does not have guided tours. There is a replica of Muiredach's cross in the county museum in Dundalk. This replica has a multimedia feature which allows visitors to see and hear what all the carvings on the cross represent. |
